Frequently Asked Questions
Am I too old to strength train? The ability to strength train is not based on chronological age. A person, of any age, can strength train. I have people in my classes who are in their 90s. Beginning at the age of 30, if we don’t exercise, we loose about a pound of muscle per year. That’s 10 pounds of muscle a decade! By adding strength training to your exercise routine, you will maintain your muscle mass or even add to it as you age. Will I get bulky muscles? No. In order to get bulky muscles, you would need to use very heavy weights and work out for much longer than this DVD. If you are a woman, you won’t have enough of the male hormone, testosterone to build bulky muscles easily. What you will get from this DVD is nicely toned, stronger muscles, and more energy throughout the day.How long will it take to see the effects of strength training? Most people will be able to see the effects of strength training within 4 to 6 weeks. And, you will feel better and have more energy after the first workout.I have heart disease/diabetes/osteoporosis, can I still lift weights?Yes! In fact, strength training can stop the progress of osteoporosis and in some cases has actually reversed the condition of osteoporosis. Doctors strongly recommend exercise as part of treatment for people with heart disease and diabetes. Keep in mind that you should check with your doctor before beginning this or any exercise program. Will I gain weight by strength training? Most people will actually lose weight due to strength training. You will be gaining muscle, which does weight more than fat, but it burns more calories than fat. A pound of fat will burn about 2 calories in a 24-hour period while a pound of muscle will burn 35 to 50 calories. How often do I need to strength train? You should do strength training exercises two to three times per week. It doesn’t need to take more than 15 to 20 minutes to get a great work out. This DVD offers you the choice of completing upper body and lower body exercises on different days, so it won’t take a lot of your time.I’m not a senior citizen, but I have physical limitations/chronic disease. Can I still use this DVD?Absolutely! People under the age of 65 who are overweight, have arthritis, have had a stroke or other major illness, or who are just out of shape can also use this DVD and have great results. The strength training exercises on this DVD are simple, the pace is slower, and they can be done from a chair if needed. Some people may want to begin their exercise program with this DVD and then, as they get stronger, move on to a more advanced program. Is this DVD only for women? No! Most men will also benefit from this DVD. It is especially great for men because they don’t have to exercise in an aerobics room with all women; they can use this DVD in their own home. Because men are generally stronger in their upper body than women, use of heavier hand weights may be appropriate.
